CATHERINE YU UNTALAN graduated cum laude with a degree in BA Psychology from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, recently received her Diploma in Environment and Natural Resource Management from the University of the Philippines-Open University and is continuing her Masters in the Coastal track. Although her plans were originally to pursue law, she decided to take a year off after finishing her studies to join a beauty pageant. That contest is Miss Philippines-Earth 2006, primarily because of its advocacy she being an environment volunteer since college. She did not only win the major title in her first try but had the chance to represent the country in one of the top 3 most prestigious pageants which is Miss Earth. There, she finished 3rd amongst 82 countries as Miss Earth-Water 2006.

It became her stepping stone to become the Executive Director of the Miss Earth Foundation, a non-profit organization which ably serves as the environmental-social-humanitarian outreach arm of the MISS EARTH® organizations here in the Philippines and abroad. She has represented the group to the 2007 United Nations Convention on Climate Change in Bali, Indonesia and was a guest of honor at the recently held Green Fashion Miami show in Miami, USA.

As the head of the Miss Earth Foundation, she is also responsible for the successful projects to name a few: I Love My Planet Earth School and Community Tours which has reached more than 100,000 beneficiaries, Special Screening of WALL-E and Upcycled Art Making Contests for public school students and orphans from Nayon ng Kabataan, Miss Earth Eco-Fashion Design Competition which is one of the first shows which focused on Filipino ingenuity on showcasing culture and the environment. As an advocate of Environmental Education in the country, she (along with Reena Sarmiento and Astrid Tobias) wrote Bakawan, a children’s book about the long forgotten mangroves which also teaches the values of responsibility about wastes we produce and unity in making our communities a cleaner and safer place to live in. This book will be part of the Bright Minds Read Program of the Department of Education starting next school year 2009-2010.

She is constantly invited to give talks about youth empowerment, environment and leadership. She has delivered key note messages to top universities such as the University of the Philippines-Diliman, Manila, De La Salle University, University of Sto. Tomas and even private organizations such as Rotary Clubs, JCI and the People Management Association of the Philippines.

In line with her environmental advocacy, she is a noted spokesperson of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for various campaigns and of the Department of Health for their anti-tobacco smoking campaign. The Sustainable Energy Development Program of the United States Agency for International Development also chose her to be the spokesperson of their biofuels campaigns. The same organization cited her efforts and participation in their programs. She is the first ambassador to be given such distinction.

She is also a sought after events host of government activities, corporate events and pageant activities of Turismo Pilipina, Miss Philippines-Earth, Miss Earth International. She is also a ramp model who does shows for the country’s top designers here and abroad. She was the former courtside reporter of San Beda Red Lions (Season 82) and UP Fighting Maroons (Season 67). Currently, she hosts a show in NBN Channel 4 entitled Kapihan ng Bayan with veteran broadcast journalists, Mario Garcia and Ely Saludar.
